0 … thinking about it, we are in a very interesting era in mental health: that incessant repetition of seemingly wise phrases (based upon snuck premises) like: ‘Give second chances,‘cause everybody deserves them!‘, ‘See the good in everyone!‘, ‘Forgiveness will set you free!‘, keeps promoting a mind set which, in broad strokes, focuses on stepping back + actually thinking about things outside of a dysfunction-framework, talking about function for a change – a quite compelling positivity discourse putting out content as to the simple joys of finding, like, one‘s bliss in quarantine (- as if the only reason someone‘s miserable was just their inability to merely think positively -) +, well, in the right hands it surely is a healthy lens; Still there‘s a danger in this constant proselytising That way of thinking just does not acknowledge the fact that many people are struggling for more serious reasons than just their tendency to whine instead of acting on the issues they are facing Someone‘s feeling overwhelmed wont change by being told that somehow they‘re the own reason of their misery, because they‘re simply thinking wrongly about their circumstances Apart from that approach just being disrespectful + unkind, this unwillingness to hear anything that does not suit one particular narrative (+ writing off people who are seeing things in a different manner, due to their experiences, as having ‘bad energy‘ or as ‘bringing toxic vibes‘, without even thinking twice, for ‘their negativity would mess them up‘, as they claim) is revealing that there‘s a very emotionally stunted quality to it: There are adults blocking out reality - sort of like the ugly underbelly of adult life in this day + age just did not exist - preferring to hold on to made-up metaphysical incantations, magical, universal intentions (like: ‘If people just believed in deserving abundance in a truly deep manner, it‘d be ‘bout to come to them!‘ or: ‘Don‘t even talk about any phenomena like paric‘larly horrific malignant narcissists, the world just is not like this! Don‘t be enabling this kind of negative nonsense!‘), trying to keep up those child- like phantasies, upon which their conception of the world + life is based, at all costs So, seen up close, there‘s a catch: while those rather immature positivity beliefs about life, love + purpose may work for some people + may even provide them with some kind of source of solace, that kind of mind set also puts people under pressure, hence might even be harmful to people in some cases… (CMH)
