Episode opens up with all the actresses in "Lez Girls" introducing themselves, along with Tina and Jesse, for the first production meeting of the film. Theme song plays, and there's a scene with Bette and Tina. Bette accuses Tina of avoiding her. She denies it at first, but then admits it. Bette wants to talk but knows Tina is busy with the movie. It's awkward and they finally decide that they'll get to talk about what happened when the time is right.
Meanwhile Shane is seduced by Cindi (of Cindi and Dawn, the owners of SheBar) ... Shane is worried that she is breaking rules by not inviting Dawn, but Cindi (the blonde) says she wants her all to herself and convinces her that Dawn won't mind. So then Shane and Cindi do it on a couch. (Cindi invites Shane to her and Dawn's house and greets her stark naked. Shane sort of gulps and says, "Nice shoes."
Kit's storyline appears to be just that Cindi and Dawn, contrary to their previous assertion, *are* in fact competing with The Planet, as SheBar has started serving coffee and breakfast, and they've even started copying some of Kit's ideas for The Planet.
Bette calls Tina while she's at work, and wants to tell her something but doesn't ... Tina thinks she is going to talk about the kiss, so she prompts her to tell her what's on her mind. Bette starts talking about what Jodi did with the student and how there's a huge commotion over that piece of art (in which a student held a gun to his head and threatened to shoot himself), and asks whether she should intervene because Jodi isn't likely to be able to control her temper with a committee that's supposed to investigate the issue. Tina is clearly frustrated and tells Bette to let Jodi be and to let her deal with the consequences herself -- she tells Bette to support her as much as possible but to basically stay out of the situation. Disappointed, Tina ends the call by saying she has to get to work.
Tina also takes Adele aside and thanks her for diffusing the Jenny/Niki situation. She requests Adele to give her a heads-up if something pops up with Jenny that mind be a problem for production.
Remember the black basketball player that Alice and Tasha saw at that Hollywood party? Well, Alice is watching television and sees the same guy -- a flaming homo at the party -- putting down another basketball player for coming out, and making outrageous homophobic remarks. Alice and Tasha are disgusted upon seeing this. Tasha says she hopes he gets what's coming to him, and Alice says that it's guys like him who make it difficult for the military to accept gays.
Moving on. Jenny is having a party for the actors and production team of "Lez Girls". Max thinks there's something weird about Adele, and does one of his infamous "computer searches" to look her up. He brings up some discrepancies about her past to Jenny, who of course tells him off and calls Adele to clarify matters. Adele covers up for the discrepancies sufficiently though she seems shaken, and Jenny tells her to get back to work (preparing for the party).
(Honestly I almost feel sorry for Mia Kirshner for having to play such a despicable character.)
I should also mention that Alice is ridiculously transphobic in this episode. When Max says about Adele something along the lines of, "I feel she's not what she appears to be", Alice retorts, "Yeah, you're one to talk, Max." I was sitting in a theatre packed with a VERY L-Word-friendly and forgiving crowd from NYU, and practically everyone booed at that scene. I truly hope scribegrrrl rips it apart proper when she recaps the episode. What the writers have done to these characters is just a travesty sometimes.
"Max is waaay too forgiving to Alice. He should refuse to talk to her after what she said, but anyway, he is helping her with another podcast. Alice is doing about the STUPIDEST and most egoistic thing she could ever do at this point -- not only because it's unethical, but because anyone with a shred of common sense would know that such a stunt would harm the trial proceedings of their significant other who is being investigated for homosexual conduct by the military. That's right -- Alice has recorded a podcast to expose the closeted-and-outwardly- homophobic basketball player. And it's a very crude and insensitive expose. She even uses the video footage that she had taken at the party. And Max uploads it to the website.
Within a few hours, Alice's podcast and video are all over national news channels, and she's being invited to do interviews. For some reason Tasha is not around and Alice is unable to get in touch with her. She wants to know Tasha's opinion on the situation and what she should say on national television, but can't get through. She goes on national television and is grilled by some anchorman on why she did this, and asked how she could ruin said basketball player's life and career (said basketball player has issued a statement saying he is going to ask the Lord for forgiveness and be with his family). Alice defends what she did by saying that the guy was a hypocrite and he was adversely affecting the lives of gay people being discriminated against and killed every day, etc., etc. The anchorman says, "Well, she may have a point there." Me, I'm just about throwing up at this point.
Bette tries to convince Jodi to not go to Jenny's party so that they can stay at home and "reconnect", since the issue at work has created some distance between them. They make out for a while and then Jodi insists that they go to Jenny's party and come back and reconnect. Bette reluctantly agrees, trying to convince herself that she doesn't care about Jenny's silly film and doesn't see it as being connected to her personally.
OK ... don't remember too many details after that. Jenny's party happens, and everyone goes there. Shane has made hash brownies. Alice meets the actress playing Elise, and offers to help her with the part. Bette sees Tina and walks over to talk to her. Tina introduces Bette to the actress playing Bev. Bev is incredibly stupid and blunt, and says she's been researching Bette to better understand the role. And then she says all this stuff about how she can't understand why Bev is constantly sabotaging everything that is going well for her -- and why did Bev cheat with a plumber?
Bette loses her temper and yells at the Bev actress, saying she is nothing like Jenny's character, and also says she can't believe that Jenny has cast an actress for that role who is SO WHITE! You go, girl!
Bette storms away and tells Jodi she wants to leave the party. Jodi is sitting with an actress and Bette assumes they were flirting. Jodi says the actress is the straightest person she's ever met and that she was just trying to explain lesbian sex to her. Jodi can't understand why Bette is so upset. Bette says she's leaving anyway, and Jodi says okay, still incredulous at her behavior.
Bette leaves, but Tina follows her out and apologizes for the Bev actress's behavior. Bette admits that she still has no answers to the questions that the actress was asking. Tina tries to comfort her. They admit that what happened the previous night was a mistake and they were just caught up in the moment. Bette asks Tina if she regrets it, and she says she does -- which visibly upsets Bette. Tina asks Bette if she's in love with Jodi. Bette hesitates and answers that she is, but it sounds forced and fake. The two part and go their separate ways but it's clear there's unfinished business.
After this, the party is in full swing, the music is playing, and everyone is dancing and/or high. Dawn and Cindi crash the party. Dawn turns off the music and yells at Shane for having sex with Cindi without inviting her. She threatens to ruin her and all her friends and storms out. Cindi apologizes for her partner's behavior but follows her out. Everyone is high or drunk or something, so they just laugh and don't care.
Jenny and Niki re-enact the real-life Jenny's kissing scene with Marina in the bathroom. They eventually end up having sex in a closet, which Adele sees.
Tasha arrives and yells at Alice for what she's done. Alice is very selfish and reacts by saying she was trying to call her all day to ask her what to say or to get her permission. Tasha responds by asking how this could possibly have been the right thing to do given that her trial is coming up. And she says Alice had no right to out that basketball player. Alice wants to delude herself into thinking that she actually did it *for* Tasha's sake (because people like this basketball player are the reason why the military won't accept gays). Also she selfishly says that she doesn't want to put her own life on trial, and that *she* didn't sign up for the military, etc. They exchange words and Tasha storms out, with both saying they don't want to see the other.
Finally whoever is left at the party jumps into Bette's pool -- Bette is very angry at the noise as she's been trying to sleep, and makes a noise complaint.
Tina is totally drunk and Jodi refuses to let her drive home or even hail a cab. She brings her into Bette's place and offers to get her some water. Meanwhile Tina crashes on Bette's couch and falls asleep. Bette comes out in her pajamas at this point and Jodi explains that Tina was too drunk so she brought her in. Jodi gets Tina a cushion and covers her up with a blanket. Meanwhile, Bette stares at Tina asleep on her couch, and seems totally confused about what to do with the two women in her life as she clearly likes them both.
Okay, that's all I remember. Like I said, the details and sequence might be a bit off, but that's the general gist. The most enjoyable parts were the interactions between Beals and Holloman, who are both good actresses. Most shocking was Alice's behavior this episode -- totally out of character, both the transphobic stuff and the impulsive expose of the basketball player.
